We were appalled to recently discover a group called Earth First! has created a contest encouraging citizens to smash and destroy security cameras. Earth First! is “a self-proclaimed direct action “radical environmental” group formed in 1979 by some former lobbyists for the Wilderness Society and Friends of the Earth, both mainstream environmental groups, who were disillusioned with mainstream environmentalist tactics.”
A “winner” of this contest will be based on which town reports the most destruction in US dollars. However, according to EF, “when surveillance apparatus are crippled we all win”.
We are at a loss for words. We understand not all citizens believe or support the use of public surveillance cameras, but this is still damaging another’s property, and how is this right?
Not only that, but in the US, you are on surveillance camera an average of 8-10 times a day. A contest having citizens smash a camera here or there is just plain ludicrous. It is only encouraging anarchy, as this same citizen will inevitably be captured and caught by surveillance.
The Electronic Security Association rallies back, encouraging citizens to be more aware of their surroundings and equipment, and to communicate with the local law enforcement. They say to “be on the lookout for individuals lurking around your property and review your surveillance footage daily for any outages. By working closely with local law enforcement agencies, our industry can prevent costly damages to equipment.”
